Traditionally, languages have been taught with the instructor being the source of the learner's language experience. The instructor therefore becomes a barrier between the learner and the language itself. The Language Resource Center however, focuses on learners being able to directly experience the language in a meaningful and communicative way, with the instructor being there to guide students by providing linguistic and cultural expertise, in order to maximize the efficacy of the learner's language acquisition.

The instructors at the Learning Resource Center provide language learners with real sources in the foreign language matched to the learner's capabilities, interests and needs; contextualize these sources; and allow opportunities for learners to respond to the materials, promoting meaningful communication in the target language. Through this, students develop a real awareness of the language as a way of self-expression, instead of simply processing the language in an artificial and formulaic way.
